Vietnam Confirmed as BRICS Partner Country

Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially confirmed that Vietnam has become a partner country of the BRICS group. This move affirms the country’s commitment to contributing to the voice and role of developing nations on the global stage.

In response to media inquiries on June 14 regarding the recent announcement by Brazil, the rotating chair of BRICS, the Spokesperson for Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized:

“In line with our proactive and comprehensive approach to international integration, Vietnam has made and will continue to make practical contributions to multilateral mechanisms, organizations, and forums, aiming to promote peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and globally.”

Vietnam actively participates in multilateral platforms such as the United Nations, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the expanded G7 and G20 formats, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Joining BRICS as a partner country demonstrates Vietnam’s intention to contribute to the collective voice of developing countries and to promote international solidarity and inclusive multilateralism, based on the respect for international law.

This partnership also reflects Vietnam’s consistent foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralism, diversification of external relations, and its role as a trusted partner and responsible member of the international community.

BRICS, established in 2009, originally included Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining later. In recent years, the group has expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. Several other nations, including Vietnam, have been welcomed as BRICS partner countries.

Vietnam’s Prime Minister attended the BRICS+ Leaders’ Summit in October last year in Kazan, Russia. During a visit to Vietnam in March 2025, Brazil’s President extended an invitation to Vietnam to attend the upcoming BRICS Summit and the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), both to be held in Brazil later this year.
