The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) identifies tilapia, particularly Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), as one of the aquaculture species with the greatest potential to meet the growing global demand for sustainable protein.
Under its Blue Transformation 2022–2030 roadmap, FAO emphasizes that aquaculture will play a critical role in global food security. Tilapia stands out due to its suitability for large-scale farming, relatively affordable production costs, and strong economic efficiency.
According to FAO, tilapia offers several important advantages, including rapid growth, high survival rates, strong adaptability to a wide range of environmental conditions, and a low feed conversion ratio (FCR). The species is suitable for both small-scale farming and industrial aquaculture systems.
Asia is currently the world's largest tilapia-producing region and is expected to remain the main driver of industry growth over the coming decades.
Against this backdrop, three Asian countries are pursuing different strategies to develop their tilapia industries.
China: Maintaining Global Leadership
China remains the world's largest producer and exporter of tilapia. However, the industry is facing the impact of changes in international trade policies and the ongoing development of fisheries-related regulations. These challenges are prompting businesses to adjust their production and export strategies accordingly.
Indonesia: Promoting Tilapia under the Green Economy Strategy
Indonesia has identified tilapia as a priority species under its “Green Economy” strategy. The country is encouraging the conversion of underperforming shrimp farming areas into brackish-water tilapia farms, while developing integrated production chains and traceability systems to support export expansion, particularly to the European Union.
Vietnam: Emerging as a Fast-Growing Tilapia Exporter
Meanwhile, Vietnam has emerged as one of the countries with the fastest-growing tilapia exports in Asia.
Vietnam is developing tilapia farming areas in the Red River Delta and Mekong Delta in accordance with international standards, with a focus on improving product quality, ensuring stable supply, and diversifying seafood export products alongside pangasius.
These developments are expected to help Vietnam strengthen its presence in key markets such as the United States, European Union, and Middle East, while enhancing the country's position in the global tilapia supply chain.
With increasing global demand for sustainable and affordable protein, tilapia is expected to play an increasingly important role in the future of aquaculture and global food security.
